Heart of Glass

In this project, we’ve been tasked to choose a location on a wide coast line with various geographical features to design a shelter for a certain scenario. So I choose this cove because of it’s isolated, mother womb like, alive, dynamic, protected characteristics of space. A cliff, surrounding the cove, protecting the coast from strong winds and rough waves. There was almost no need for shelter at all. Just a thin, transparent, naked structure between nature and human…

After hours of timelapse videos recorded on site, I found out that cove was under influnce by strong tidal changes. In the middle of the cove, there was a road, linear rocky moss covered road. This road was arises with night tides, and sinking with morning tides. So the main idea between design (isolation with nature) is intensified with this road by being the only way to access the shelter. This experience wasn’t practical at all but it is very romantic in a sense.

The structure of shelter is suspended with steel beams penetrating on to a cliff, not touching the ground and not interrupting the nature by just being an observer or a parasite with no intentions. The beams extends from cliff with different angles, creating crystal-like formed cage, coated with various types of glass materials and developed by ventilation strategies. Back of the shelter, there is the rough cliff’s monumental rock surface planned to dramatized with wall washer lighting fixtures from top and above.

Ground floor is designed as a semi-open part of the path to shelter and floor is covered with semi-reflective glass in order to create infinity mirror effect with below water surface (which is suprisingly still water path reflecting the light like a mirror) and maximizing the feeling of void.

Upper floor is designed for one or two people with basic needs.

To sum-up, the design is based on the feeling of solitude and the philosophy of optimistic nihilism.
